Selection is Critical To Caregiver Recruiting and Retention

Our research into caregiver recruiting and retention since 2005 shows clearly that one of the critical elements of your business is your Caregiver Quality Selection System. We’ve learned that many companies have a very poorly crafted, subjective interviewing and selection system that results in hiring job applicants who quit in the first 90 days.

The annual Home Care Benchmarking Study from Home Care Pulse showed that caregiver turnover in 2019 was 64.3%, an improvement from the 81.6% industry wide turnover in 2018. This same data study showed that 80% of turnover happens in the first 90 days.

We have explored the causes of turnover in the first 90 days, and we have reached three conclusions about how to reduce 90-day turnover. We’ll describe those in detail in a future article on The Caregiver Quality Retention System. In the meantime, we have learned that the first big cause of 90 day turnover is hiring caregivers who are not a good for the the job of caregiver, and not a good fit for your company. If you do a better job of screening out applicants who are not a good fit, you’ll be able to keep those that you do hire.

The first step in improving caregiver retention is the Caregiver Quality Selection System. As a Member of Caregiver Quality Assurance, you and four other members of your team will have access to the CQA Online Learning System. Course #2 is all about this election system. Providing training and ongoing support for those members of your team who interview and select caregivers is the only way you can improve your hiring results. If you want to improve your 90-day retention, then you’ll want to consider becoming a member of the Caregiver Quality Assurance program. Access to this online learning system is only available through an annual membership. This membership also enables you and your team to participate in a Caregiver Quality Mastermind Group, where you meet regularly online with leaders from other home care companies that are similar is size to your company, that do not compete with you in your local marketplace, and that share the same challenges you face.
